Cinco de Mayo really celebrates the strength, courage, and resilience of the Mexican people. 2000 Mexicans defended their land against 6000 French soldiers. They won the battle on May 5th, 1862. 150 years ago, in Puebla.
For many years, the date was marked locally for the most part. All that changed during the Franco-Mexican war. Mexican-Americans living in California began to recognize the day to support Mexico.
