Back in the day, an up-and-coming restaurateur was also known around Fort Worth as the Kingpin of Gambling! Gambling came first for Tiffin Hall but then the first Mexican Inn Café followed in 1936.

Tiffin Hall actually continued successfully running both of his business ventures, restaurant and gambling hall, into the 50s. The food was good, and he treated customers right. From Star Advertising Strategy to Bedford & Keller & East Lancaster

Who was Star? Star was the family pet back when the Mexican Inn Café first opened. The original location was in downtown Fort Worth. Admittedly, you have to wonder what gimmicks might have been used for advertising in the 30s. Sure, there were newspapers, and word of mouth has always worked. But Tiffin Hall was nothing if not creative!

Star was not a dog or a cat, or even a horse. He was a friendly burro! Not out to harm anyone. But he was arrested more than once!

The burro wore a banner advertising the new restaurant. MEXICAN INN CAFÉ…MEXICAN FOOD EXCLUSIVELY…FOLLOW ME TO MEXICAN INN. And sure enough, each time he was let loose around town, he’d find his way back to the Inn with his followers. And he was handsomely rewarded with – you guessed it! A few fresh, warm, homemade tortillas!
